FAQs
When should my child first see a pediatric dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits give you the opportunity to monitor development in the crucial fast-changing stages of life and help your child build a positive association with dental care.
What makes a pediatric dentist different from a general dentist?
A pediatric dentist completes specialized training in children’s oral health after dental school, including tooth and jaw development, common issues to prevent, common patterns to monitor for, behavior management, and care for children with special medical needs.
Do you offer weekend appointments for kids?
Yes. We offer pediatric dentist appointments on Saturdays because we know that weekday appointments can be a challenge for families. Saturday availability does fill quickly, so we recommend reaching out in advance if a weekend appointment works best for your family.
Which conditions can a pediatric dentist help treat?
We’ll evaluate your child’s teeth, gums, and development to determine the care they need. Below are examples of conditions that can be treated with pediatric dental care:
Simple:
- Teething discomfort and eruption monitoring
- Early tooth decay on baby teeth
- Routine checkups and cleanings
- Cavity prevention
Moderate:
- Thumb-sucking or pacifier habits affecting tooth alignment
- Cavities requiring fillings on baby or permanent teeth
- Tongue-tie or lip-tie evaluation
- Early signs of crowding or spacing issues
- Minor tooth injuries from falls or sports
Complex:
- Tooth infections or abscesses in baby teeth
- Pulp therapy (baby tooth root canal) to save a damaged tooth
- Dental care for children with special medical needs
- Early interceptive orthodontic evaluation and referral
- Enamel defects or developmental abnormalities
- Dental trauma requiring emergency care (knocked-out or fractured teeth)
Limitations (may need referral or additional care):
- Complex orthodontic treatment (referred to orthodontist)
- Jaw alignment or skeletal growth issues
- Oral surgery beyond simple extractions
- Medical conditions requiring coordination with a physician before treatment
